Abraham Becomes a Philosopher: The Transformation of the Patriarch
Category Herzstein Lecture
Year: 2011
Time: 65 minutes
Levenson is the Albert A. List Professor of Jewish Studies at Harvard Divinity School. His book Resurrection and the Restoration of Israel: The Ultimate Victory of the God of Life (Yale University Press, 2006) won a National Jewish Book Award and the Biblical Archaeology Society Publication Award in the category of Best Book Relating to the Hebrew Bible published in 2005 or 2006.

In his lecture, Levenson will propose that Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism saw Abraham not only as the patriarch who fathered the people of the covenant, as we find in Genesis, but also as the faithful sage who restored the true and proper recognition and worship of God by seeing through the false pretenses of idolatry and the philosophical claims on which idolatry relies.
