Underlying the great patristic texts on the Holy Spirit, whose purpose was to defend the full divinity of the Third Person of the Trinity, was a profound understanding of the Holy Spirit's work in the life of the Church. An expression in St. Basil the Great, meaning "Ancient Love", provides an important insight for the renewal of the Church divided and exhausted by theological controversy. "Apostolic" and "Spiritual" are concepts deeply intertwined.
