The Development of the Divine Office
Category Lenten Lecture
Year: 2010
Time: 87 minutes
Dr. Paul Hahn, Chair of the Theology Department at the University of St. Thomas, discusses what the praying the Hours might mean for us today.

The early Church did not just worship its Lord through the sacraments; it also developed a system of daily prayers. These became known as the "Divine Office" or the "Liturgy of the Hours."

From its roots in Judaism to its enlargement under the Benedictines and its compilation as the medieval "breviary," this system of prayers was been integral to the liturgy of the Church. Most recently, the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s mandated a revision of the Divine Office and urged greater participation in it by the laity.
